I receive multiple requests for teaching nonviolent communication to children. When I had my first request I wasn’t sure how to respond. After researching I discovered that the first step is to teach children to name and express their emotions. You can go back and see my video or read my blog post on identifying emotions in children for more detail. To give a brief recap we need to teach that emotions are not good or bad. They are neutral. When given the ability to name and feel the emotion, healing or expression will happen automatically. We have the responsibility to model and teach healthy ways to respond to our emotions.
To build on learning to name and recognize emotions I want to give a suggestion for a powerful book my good friend Rachelle Castor created. It is called Emotional Super Powers: Empower a Child – Heal the World.
This book is for children 4-104, so that includes you! It is a workbook designed to help you recognize your emotions and then choose how to respond to those feelings. It teaches emotional intelligence in an easy, fun format that includes the whole life approach.
It teaches the connection of senses through these 5 steps:
- Choose It: recognize the feelings
- Live it: Diffuse Oils
- Move it: Yoga
- Record It: keep a journal
- Give It: see the emotions in others and tell them.
You will learn skills like healthy boundaries, self-care, trust, finding your voice, confidence, self-control, play, and the power of letting go.
Rachelle and I will be teaching a class on Wednesday August 12, 2020 @ 6:30 to go into more detail on these techniques. Sign up on FB
